Taking care of hygiene financially burdens the displaced.. WATAN’s project to improve hygiene

Day by day the health situation continues to worsen due to the horrific spread of COVID-19. So need to spread awareness of personal hygiene during this times has become extremely important to alleviate some of the burdens of the displaced and so a large project with this aim has been launched.

Through this project, help was provided to many different camps, including: Quneitrat, Badlaha, Noor Halab, Al-Ghufran, Al-Atlal ‘Termanin’, Al-Fadl ‘Termanin’, Al-Salam ‘Burj Al-Nimra’, Karakat, Hass ‘Kawkab’, Abyadh. And services provided included:

  • Supplying sterile water through tanks.
  • Removal of solid waste.
  • Cleaning of septic tanks.
  • Providing solar energy systems to operate wells, including necessary equipment.
  • Implementation of sewage networks.
  • Implementation of water networks – covering operational costs.

The project was launched at the beginning of this year, and by the end of August these are some of the most important milestones achieved:

  1. Commencement of works to provide the following daily services: a secure water supply, technical pits, and solid waste removal.
  2. Preparation of tenders (sewage, water networks, solar energy), and evaluation of responses for the selection of contractors.

Based on the latest update, the number of beneficiaries of these services, since the start of the project up until now, has reached 1818 families – approximately 11200 individuals.

So the following have been completed:

  1. Getting rid of the water outside leaking on the streets, which leads to the formation of swamps containing a lot of dirt and diseases.
  2. Take advantage of the water coming out of the coagulation pit to irrigate the neighboring agricultural lands.
  3. Decreased incidence of diseases in the camps by removing the causes that lead to it, whilst also ensuring that sterilized water reaches all families, alleviating some of their financial burdens.

These services are expected to contribute to:

  • Reduce the spread of diseases and epidemics, due to increase of personal hygiene and improvement of cleanliness in the camps.
  • Supporting families with low incomes, widows, and people with special needs, and easing the financial burden on these families.
  • Highlighting the importance of good personal hygiene to those in camps through awareness campaigns.
  • Reducing the pressures experienced by camp residents due the situation in which they live, and the effects of the spread of the COVID 19 virus
  • The safe disposal of solid waste in the camps, by transferring it to a special environment.
  • Supporting the camps’ infrastructure through maintenance, restoration and construction of bathroom blocks, the construction of a sewage system, and the improvement of roads by paving them. This will facilitate work and movement without obstacles.
  • Establishing a sewage network that can be used in the future, that can also be expanded to accommodate a larger number of beneficiaries.
  • Providing a safe and healthy environment
